Information about the data

The mapping arms data (MAD) visualization tool is a project of the Peace Research Institute Oslo (PRIO) and the Igarape Institute. Launched in 2013, it is based on the original small arms and ammunition tool developed by Google's Creative Lab in collaboration with Google Ideas, PRIO and the Igarape Institute, as part of the 2012 INFO Summit.

The data visualization includes more than 71 000 individual import and export records from 37 different sources between 1992 and 2014, and maps the transfer of small arms and ammunition across over 260 states and territories.
